Why Trades Are the Future of Work

At Sisterhood of Trades, we believe in empowering and connecting the next generation of tradeswomen and tradesmen worldwide. Our mission is to advocate for women, close the skills gap, elevate blue-collar excellence, and show the world that trades are not just jobs, they are careers that build communities, families, and the future.

Governments all over the world are investing in growth and with that comes the need to build. New schools, businesses, bridges, roads, and power plants are being built constantly, and our world modernizes every single day.

But while we’re building the future, tradespeople are retiring every day, and a new generation of skilled workers is needed to take their place.

When you’re in the trades, your skills are globally transferable - you can take your craft anywhere in the world. And in most cases, becoming a certified tradesperson takes less time and less debt than earning a college degree.

Better yet, most tradespeople earn as much or more than university graduates. There are countless paths to success: union careers, contracting, small business ownership, or working with companies that value hands-on expertise.

Why Trades Matter

Think about all the different trades in the world, what’s so significant about them?

Opportunity.

What keeps the world developing? Trades.

Think long-term: what will humanity always keep doing?

Building.

From infrastructure to innovation, trades keep the world moving forward. There’s always work somewhere, and there always will be. That’s why skilled trades are the future of work, and so is our generation.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

  • The International Labour Organization estimates a 45-million-person shortage in skilled trades by 2030, especially in construction, electrical, and mechanical fields.

  • Retirement is outpacing recruitment by more than 2:1, meaning we’re losing experience faster than we’re replacing it.

  • Only 1 in 5 Gen Z students are considering a career in the trades (Forbes, 2024).

  • Every unfilled construction or manufacturing job costs companies an estimated $50,000+ per year in lost productivity.

The trades aren’t disappearing, they’re evolving.

They’re essential, sustainable, and full of opportunity.

And those who step up today will build not just careers but the future.

At Sisterhood of Trades, we’re proud to stand for this movement creating partnerships, building visibility, and opening doors for skilled workers around the world. Together, we’re not just talking about the future of work. We want to have a big part in building it.
