In the fast-paced world of work—especially in the trades—it’s easy to focus only on deadlines, output, and technical precision. But there’s a simple, often overlooked tool for improving morale and performance: a genuine compliment.
While it may seem small, recognition can have an outsized impact on employee engagement, motivation, and even retention.
Why Compliments Matter
1. Recognition Fuels Motivation - When employees hear that their skills, effort, or attitude are appreciated, it tells them that their contributions matter. This validation often encourages them to keep going, push harder, and take pride in their work
2. Compliments Build Confidence - Learning new skills or tackling complex jobs can be intimidating. A well-timed compliment: “You did a great job on that weld,” or “Your attention to detail made a big difference here”, can reassure workers they’re on the right track
3. Positive Feedback Strengthens Team Culture - A culture where compliments are freely given creates a more collaborative environment. Teams that feel valued tend to communicate better, support one another, and resolve conflicts faster.
4. It’s a No-Cost, High-Impact Engagement Strategy - Employee engagement initiatives can be expensive and time-consuming. Compliments, on the other hand, cost nothing and can be given instantly. Yet their effects - greater job satisfaction, reduced turnover, and higher productivity - are measurable and lasting
How to Make Compliments Count
Be Specific: Instead of a vague “Good job,” highlight what exactly was done well
Be Timely: Give the compliment as soon as possible after the action
Be Genuine: People can spot empty praise a mile away. Make sure your compliment is authentic
Spread It Around: Recognize contributions from everyone, not just the most visible high performers
After all, a simple “Well done” today could be the reason someone brings their best again tomorrow.
Nush A. asked the Sisterhood of Trades members to share why it's important to be complimented at work by your bosses and managers, and how they impact engagement at work:
"Being recognized for what you can do, especially when you work with a bunch of guys who are typically bigger and/or stronger, really goes a long way. It’s shown me that the trades are changing, and our effort and dedication mean just as much as it does from the guys now. Something as small as being told your idea was good can change your mindset if you’re down on yourself."
"Having been a manager, I can speak from both sides. Giving positive feedback and praise makes people feel good. It boosts their confidence in their work and pushes them to continue doing better. Oftentimes, we’re our own worst critics and need someone to tell us, “Hey, you’re doing great.” It’s why I always use constructive criticism when doing evaluations or teaching. It’s never good to focus on the bad in anything."
"It’s also good to know that we're being seen. Especially when a bunch of bad stuff is happening and we are getting sh** on a lot - they [bosses] see the good that we are doing too, that it isn’t all bad."
"Feeling appreciated is huge when it comes to morale in most places. Knowing your boss appreciates you and your work makes you want to continue to strive for more."
